Wow, you are actually reading this? Good on you!
In January 2020, I gifted my sister the "Mr. Happy" box. It was a wooden box with a button on top that when she pushed it, it sent her a text message designed to make her happier. It was definately not sleek, and had enough wires in it that we were worried about her taking it through airport security. But it worked. Anytime she was feeling low, she could push the button and get sent a message of positivity. This was the first version of 5¢ Therapy.
Then Covid hit and everybody got depressed. If there is one benefit though from all of that, it's that mental health became a big topic of discussion. I struggled with my own mental health quite a bit during this time and found that giving myself a daily psych up helped, if even only a small amount. I also decided to try and see a trained therapist to help even further.
Access to mental health options is not as easy as it should be. Regular therapy is often expensive and with a long wait list, making it inaccessable to many and infrequent enough to minimize the positive effects. When I asked, I was told I could be seen once every 1-3 months ☹️. Imagine going for a run once a month. How much better at running would you really get?
The truth is, we are all just trying to stay sane, with varying degrees of success. However, everyone will admit that frequent practice, no matter how small, is the the best way to get better at something. With that in mind, I set out to make it easy for people to get recurring access to good life advice at an affordable price point. This is what I came up with. I hope you like it.
